Research Grants FAQ

Can I submit more than one proposal?

Yes, you’re welcome to submit more than one proposal as long as each one is for a different project. Please avoid submitting the same project more than once.
Just keep in mind that submitting multiple proposals doesn’t necessarily increase your chances of receiving a grant, and it may appear that you’re less focused on a single research direction.

What if my project focuses on habitat or system-based research where waterbirds are affected but not a major component?

That’s absolutely fine! Our Waterbird Society Research Grant can support system-level research that meaningfully benefits waterbird conservation.
If waterbirds aren’t a major part of your project, be sure to clearly explain how your work will still support waterbird goals and conservation outcomes—this helps reviewers see the connection and score your proposal more accurately.

How much can I request for conference travel?

These grants unfortunately cannot be used for conference travel, registration, or attendance.
If you’re interested in attending the Waterbird Society’s annual conference, we do offer separate support options to help with that.

How much can I request for indirect or overhead costs?

Indirect or overhead costs aren’t allowed in these grant budgets.
If your institution normally requires administrative fees, you’ll need to request that they be waived if you receive an award.

I’ve received a grant before. Can I apply again?

Yes! Previous recipients are fully welcome to apply for future funding. There are no limits on applying again in later years.
