Recent actions by the U.S. federal government, including interruptions in approved funding and terminations of agency staff, have impacted scientific research and conservation throughout the world. To assist members affected by these actions and help advance key waterbird conservation and research projects, the Waterbird Society has approved a one-time allocation of funding for projects that have been affected by funding freezes, cancellations, or loss of key personnel.
All Waterbird Society members worldwide whose work has been impacted directly or indirectly by loss of U.S. federal funding or partnerships are eligible to apply. Applications will be judged on the overall merit of the project as well as the potential value of the emergency funds to advance planned research and conservation efforts. These funds will not fully replace funded projects, but are intended to help fill gaps and ensure continuity until long term solutions can be found. The total budget for this RFP is $5,000, and we aim to fund a maximum of 2-3 projects.
To apply, please provide:
1) A description of the planned research (i.e., existing document such as an approved or submitted proposal or contract). You will need to upload the
document to a cloud server and provide a URL linking to the document;
2) A statement (up to 150 words) explaining how recent changes in funding availability or personnel have impacted the feasibility of the planned research;
3) A description (up to 350 words) of how Waterbird Society emergency funding would be used to advance key aspects of the proposed research, including an itemized budget request. Note: this funding is not intended to cover all aspects of a project, but to fill basic and immediate needs required to keep projects on track (e.g., field supplies, equipment, travel, housing).
The initial deadline for submission of proposals is 9 May 2025 and we plan to begin funding projects as soon as mid-May; however, submissions will be accepted until all funding has been allocated. Proposals can be submitted through the online submission form. Please direct any questions to thewaterbirdsociety@gmail.com. We look forward to your submissions!
